Balfour Beatty and Atkins have been appointed to deliver a £200m bypass scheme, part of the Highways England Trans-Pennine road upgrade programme.

The firms have been appointed to design and construct the new bypass, which will take traffic away from the village of Mottram in Longdendale, Greater Manchester.

Balfour’s contract is worth £108m with Atkins serving as design partner on the project, to construct new dual and single lane carriageways including an underpass below part of the village.

A public consultation on the scheme is planned for this winter, with a planning application due to be submitted next year. If the plans are approved by the government then work could start in 2023.
